Coordinate and manage the monitoring of water quality of state lakes and public beaches and provide statewide assessments.  Support 319 non-point source program lake and reservoir rehabilitation projects.  Coordinate the activities of staff involved in field data collection and laboratory analyses.   

  • Develop and maintain the monitoring of lakes and reservoirs statewide.
  • Assess water quality data for lakes and reservoirs using appropriate statistical model and methods.
  • Develop and maintain the monitoring of public beaches statewide.
  • Oversee lab analysis of parameters sampled at public beaches.
  • Construct weekly emails throughout the recreational season to inform public of the most current public beach monitoring results and current information regarding Harmful Algal Blooms and E. coli in Nebraska.
  • Update the NDEE website as needed to ensure accurate and reliable information on water quality at state beaches.
  • Respond to questions from the public, media, associated state agencies and other entities regarding public health issues at Nebraska lakes.
  • Participate as a stakeholder in lake construction/rehabilitation projects.
  • Act as the agency representative on the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission Aquatic Habitat Review Committee.
  • Assess and respond to fish kills and other notifications of environmental concern.
  • Assist lake owners and managers with water quality issues they may encounter.

Bachelor’s Degree in the physical sciences, natural sciences, environmental science, geology, biology, agronomy, civil engineering, environmental engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, hydrology, community and regional planning, or a related field. Experience may substitute for education or a year-for-year basis. (Consideration will be given to applicants who will receive a Bachelor's degree within 90 days of application date.)

Other Requirements: Valid driver’s license or ability to provide independent transportation; Ability to occasionally travel overnight; Ability to participate the agency’s medical monitoring program; Ability to lift 40 pounds; Ability to climb slopes and walk on uneven terrains; Ability to work in outdoor temperature extremes; Ability to walk long distances; Ability to wade through water; Ability to maintain regular and reliable attendance. 

Preferred:   Master's degree in biology, ecology, limnology, fisheries science, life sciences and environmental sciences or related field.  Experience as a program coordinator, a team leader, technical expert or as mentor to other technical staff.  Experience leading meetings, giving presentations.

Knowledge Of: the principles of aquatic ecology and limnology; biological, physical and chemical sciences; statistical and analytical methods; word processing, spreadsheet, geographic information system, and database management computer software.

Skill In: communicating with individuals and groups with varying technical backgrounds to collect and relay information; listening to and understanding others; prioritizing workloads; using analytical judgment to make decisions; public speaking and providing presentations.

Ability To:  learn and apply local, state and federal environmental laws, regulations and standards; learn, apply and uphold agency policies and procedures; establish and maintain effective working relationships with public and private officials; organize analyze and interpret data to draw conclusions and write reports; write and prepare technical papers and reports; use computer software and other tools for data storage and analysis.
