As the state's environmental regulatory agency, one of our most important responsibilities is to ensure that businesses and facilities operate according to state and federal environmental laws and regulations. NDEE offers a variety of assistance to bring about compliance. The agency also conducts inspections on a routine basis and in response to citizen complaints. In some cases, circumstances may require NDEE to use its enforcement authorities, which may result in administrative or criminal actions.

Inspection and Compliance GuidanceStarting Sept. 1, 2020, the Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy will use a Letter of Non-Compliance (LNC) to communicate when a facility is in violation of environmental regulations.
In the past, the agency used different forms of correspondence, depending on the severity of the violation. By using a single tool, NDEE hopes to bring consistency, fairness, and transparency to the Return to Compliance (RTC) process.
